This class focuses primarily on 2D Art. Students will be introduced to a variety of drawing and painting techniques such as shading, layering, blending, hatching, color mixing, scale, and repetition. Some other techniques include two-point perspective, negative space, surrealism, juxtaposition and multimedia design.  Materials for the class include pens, color pencils, watercolors, collage, sketchbook and magazines.  Since this is an online class, the supply selection has been reduced and is designed to be economical and widely available at “dollar stores”. Students will also become acquainted with the historical and contemporary developments in the art world.  Success in the course requires students to be well organized, self-disciplined, motivated, and creative.

The five big ideas of the course include the following:

• An artist’s intention transforms materials into art.
• Traditions, perspectives, worldviews, and stories can be shared through aesthetic experiences.
• Growth as an artist requires time, patience, and reflection.
• The creation of artistic works relies on the interplay of body and mind.
• Visual arts offer unique ways of exploring our identity and sense of belonging.

Grades in this course are weighted as follows:

Assignments – 40%
Each module has a mix of assignments designed to improve technical abilities.

Projects – 30%
These are larger project that require more effort, personal decisions, and more time to complete. They are a place to show what has been learned in the class and artistic expression.

Technical assignments – 5%
These are typically small tasks show students can complete the course requirements.

Art History – 10%
This is an opportunities for students to learn about new styles of art, share and give feedback on images.

Sketchbook – 15%
A place where students test and play with ideas before working on their projects.

Required Resources: a computer with internet access and pens, color pencils, watercolors, collage, sketchbook and magazines
