Foundations of Human Services (Care Economy) 11 is a course designed to introduce you to a variety of diverse sectors in the field. In this course, you will be able to choose which fields you wish to focus on and learn more about. The course highlights the vital roles of professionals in education, healthcare, emergency response, mental health and allied health—fields that support the well-being of individuals and communities.
You are required to complete four of the seven units offered in this course. Unit 1 is mandatory for all students and provides a foundational understanding of the common themes within the Care Economy. The remaining units each focus on a distinct sector, allowing for deeper exploration of specific career paths.
Sectors of the Care Economy
You will be able to choose one Module from each of the groups below:
Group 1: K-12 Education or Early Childhood Education
K-12 Education: Teachers and support staff play a crucial role in shaping young minds and preparing students for the future.
Early Childhood Education: Childcare professionals foster critical developmental milestones for young children.
Group 2: Health Care Assistants or Emergency Medical Assistants:
Health Care Assistants: These individuals provide essential support for patients in hospitals, care homes, and private residences.
Emergency Medical Assistants: Paramedics and emergency responders deliver urgent care, often in life-threatening situations.
Group 3: Mental Health Support or Allied Health
Mental Health Support: Counsellors and therapists address emotional and psychological needs, improving individuals’ overall well-being.
Allied Health: This category includes a range of professions, such as physiotherapists and dietitians, that support recovery and health maintenance.
Assessment:
The course includes both formative and summative assessments to support your learning. The culminating assessment is a portfolio presentation, which allows you to reflect on your learning and demonstrate a detailed understanding of one specific sector of the Care Economy.
