English First Peoples: Literary Studies and New Media 11 is designed to teach a broad set of literary and new media skills through an Indigenous perspective. There are opportunities to practice a variety of written genres, to evolve new media skills, and to read a selection of authentic Indigenous texts in a wide variety of media. Wherever possible, space has been provided for student choice.

Course Outline and Grading Structure

First Assignment – 10%

These include an audio recording sharing a personal introduction and land acknowledgment, and a Quiz on Indigenous diversity and citations skills.

Module 1 – Themes in Contemporary Media – 20%

Literary Studies – students are introduced to a diverse range of contemporary Indigenous texts from spoken word poets and music artists. Students learn literary skills analysing for Indigenous themes within texts. There is a wide selection of First Peoples artists with a great deal of choice. For the culminating New Media task students produce a podcast on Indigenous themes.

Assessments: Optional ZOOM tutorial, peer discussion posts and final podcast.

Module 2 – Films – 20%

New Media – a focus on Indigenous film, theme, and the documentary genre.

Assessments: Film analysis and a student-directed documentary.

Mid-Course Reflection – 10%

Students reflect on their learning and First Peoples Principles of learning.

Assessment: audio recording.

Module 3 – Novel Study – 20%

The Novel will be Tilly: A Story of Hope and Resilience by Monique Gray-Smith. Students engage in literary analysis skills and a formal essay.

Assessments: Literary Analysis paragraphs and formal essay. Assessments include a formative only draft assessment, and a self assessment exercise.

Module 4 – Inquiry Project – 20%

This culminating project, based on the First Peoples Principles of Learning, is student-led, leading to new media product of choice. There’s lots of room for choice and creativity here!

Assessment: Project based.

Required Resources: a computer with internet access and headphones/speakers.
