Compass-Navigate NIDES - Day 1: Connection, Day 2: Exploration, Day 3-5: online learning

Compass Program Overview

COMPASS is a student-centered blended learning program designed for families who are seeking something different from a five-day, face-to-face public school experience.

How COMPASS Works

Day 1 — Connections Day
Think of this as the “together day.” Students meet with peers, build relationships, and connect with their teacher. Instruction is focused on Core Competencies in communications, thinking, personal and social responsibility.

🎨 Day 2 — Explorations Day
This is the “let’s get out and discover” day. Students learn in the community through hands-on experiences including: arts and place-based learning (Yes—this means exploring real places, not just reading about them!) It’s active, creative, and rooted in real-world learning.

🏡 Days 3–5 — Home Learning
Families take the lead at home, supported every step of the way by their teacher. Children continue learning the BC curriculum at a pace and style that works best for them.

Parents and caregivers get guidance, structure, and resources—without losing the flexibility they value.

So… What Is COMPASS, Really?

It’s a unique blended learning model designed specifically for BC families who want personalized learning, community connection, and teacher support, all without the rigid structure of full-time in-person schooling.

Our teachers are genuinely excited about COMPASS—and we think you’ll feel the same once you see it in action.

Our Goal

To create learning that fits your child, not the other way around.

We build stronger community connections, offer rich educational experiences, and support families in creating meaningful learning at home.

How We Make Learning Personal

Every child starts with a Student Learning Plan (SLP). Together—caregivers, teachers, and students—we identify the child’s strengths, interests, and natural curiosities From there, we design a personalized learning plan that builds on what lights them up.

In Nanaimo, COMPASS serves students in grades 8-12 at Vancouver Island University. In the Comox Valley, we offer classes for Kindergarten to grade 9 at our Tsolum Campus.
