The course consists of one introduction topic and four ‘modules’, described below.
Introduction & Skill Building: (You completed this section as your first assignment.) This first section will have the reading, writing and grammar skills that you will first learn and then apply to the other sections of the course when you need them. A short written project is the final assignment in this section
Module 1: Poetry
Poetry is what you make it. It exists in the quiet moments and roaring ones, the songs and the sonnets, the hum of the tires on the highways and the voices calling to each other in the corridors of the night, the bedtime stories and boasts of friends. It is in the rhythm of daily life.
This unit is about giving you a better understanding to poetry, some understanding of Poetic Devices , the chance to read a variety of poems (many of your own choosing), and allow you to walk away with a better appreciation to all things Poetic.
Module 2: Short Stories & Writer’s Craft
You’ve made it this far…why not come a little further? Welcome to short stories…which seems somehow false, as any good story should be long and engrossing, right? Not necessarily true. Stories need to have some basic elements, but one of them isn’t length! They need conflict, character, dialogue, setting and plot. That’s the bare bones approach to the story.
Module 3: Independent Novel Study
Students will choose a novel of their choice (or from a suggested list) and discuss the novel using reading response journals.
Evaluation:
- First Assignment 10%
- Drop box assignments 45%
- Discussions 20%
- Module Quizzes 25%
Required resources: All materials are found and submitted online. A novel of the student’s choice will be needed.
